The Division of Industrial Waste Water Management implements programs to prevent or clean up the pollution by industry of surface and ground water in Massachusetts. The division, in accordance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (PL 92-500, s 402; PL 95-217) and the Massachusetts Clean Water Act (MGLA c 21, ss 27 and 43), joins with the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPSDES) program, as did previously the Division of Water Pollution Control, to create surface water discharge permit files, which authorize and control discharge of pollutants into surface waters.
